NEWS
Search
for legislation about nutrition and/or PA.
The CDC's Division of Nutrition and Physical
Activity (DNPA) is pleased to announce the
launch of the state legislation searchable
database. The database allows users to search
for state bills from 2001 to present related
to nutrition and/or physical activity. Users
can use search fields, enter keywords, or
search the entire database. This database
is available to the general public and no
registration or password is required. This
database was created after requests from state
partners and is the first public access database
of its kind. Please visit the database at:
http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/DNPALeg/
It can also be accessed on the DNPA home page,
Nutrition home, Physical Activity Home and
5 A Day Coordinators sections.
Obesity
affects close to 1/3 of US adults
According to 2000 data, 31 percent of adults 20 years of age and
over -- nearly 59 million people -- are classified as obese, compared
to 23 percent in 1994. See Obesity
on the rise.

Incentive Programs
Why
include one as part of your worksite wellness program?
Will
your physical activity program work?
One of the objectives included
by many of our HHW worksites describes a physical activity program
based on personal goal
setting. A new report from the CDC tags just this kind of program
as being among the most highly
recommended ways to promote physical activity. > Background

is Healthy Eating?
Is a donut unhealthy? Maybe not, if your total fat intake

The
high cost of obesity
A newly released RAND study shows that health care and Rx costs of
obesity are greater than smoking or problem drinking. The health
risk status of obesity equals the effects of aging from 30 to 50
years old. Full (3/12/02)

problems resulting from overweight and obesity...
could reverse many of the health gains achieved in the US in recent
decades, according to a Surgeon General's "call to action" issued
in December 2001.
The
importance of "Readiness to Change"
One of the keys to a successful program aimed at behavioral change
is recognizing that not everyone is equally ready to change.
Sometimes you might even push people away by failing to plan for
this variable. (Ever know someone who, the more you push 'em the
slower they go?)
