Many of Tompkins County's Healthy Heart
Worksite participants have set a physical activity objective
based on "personal
goal setting."
A recently released CDC
report that looks at ways to promote an increase
in regular physical activity identifies "Individually-adapted
health behavior change programs" as a "strongly
recommended" intervention!
The report describes "Individually-adapted"
programs as those "tailored to the person's readiness
for change or specific interests." Goal setting
and self-monitoring are cited among the ways to help
people make physical activity part of their daily routine.
Social support interventions in
community settings the workplace or other non-family
settings are another strongly recommended
category. Buddy systems, personal contracts, and walking
groups are mentioned as examples. Perhaps wellness
committees could be considered in this group as
well.
