 2018 Ithaca Bike Survey

Commissioned by the ITCTC and Bike Walk Tompkins, 2/2018. In February 2018, Bike Walk Tompkins and the ITCTC commissioned a statistical survey of bicycling use and attitudes in and around Ithaca. We were encouraged to see more biking activity than anticipated. Our main takeaway is that a significant number of people bike locally, a larger group of people want to bike more often, and an even larger group of people want to see bicycle infrastructure in and around Ithaca.

National Household Travel Survey:

The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) previously called the Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) serves as the nation's inventory of daily personal travel. It is the only authoritative source of national data on daily trips including purpose of the trip, means of transportation, how long the trip took, day of the week and month, number of people on the trip etc.

In 1995, 2001, and again in 2009, NYSDOT participated with the Federal Highway Administration as one of several add-on areas. NYSDOT purchased additional household samples to increase the coverage and reliability of the NPTS data for analysis of the travel patterns of residents within New York State; below are the selected survey results for the Ithaca MPO (ITCTC).

  • 1995 NPTS (Released February 1998. Oak Ridge National Laboratory)
  • 2001 NHTS (Released May 2004. Oak Ridge National Laboratory)
  • 2009 NHTS (Released December 2013. Oak Ridge National Laboratory)
