The Tompkins County Health Department thanks all media outlets and others that published or broadcast our press release dated August 30, 2021, seeking a dog involved in a bite incident at the Roy H. Park Preserve. The reports, along with the community’s help, allowed the Health Department to resolve the issue.
The Health Department was able to quickly locate the owner of the biting dog. The dog will be confined for a ten-day observation period at its owner’s home. A biting dog, cat, ferret or livestock animal that remains healthy for the subsequent ten-days could not have transmitted rabies to the person bitten. The Health Department urges Tompkins County residents to obtain the name, address and telephone number of the owner of a biting pet when possible.
The Tompkins County Environmental Health Division can be reached at (607) 274-6688 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The same number will reach us after normal business hours for urgent inquires.
