Seasonal flu has arrived in Tompkins County. Laboratory confirmed cases indicate that there are Tompkins County residents who have become ill with the flu this season. However, these cases do not reflect prevalence since not everyone visits a doctor when they have the flu and most diagnoses are made clinically and not through laboratory confirmation.

The Tompkins County Board of Health (BOH) anticipates two vacancies beginning January 1, 2013.

  • Two physician seats. The physician must be licensed in New York State and reside in Tompkins County.

The Tompkins County Health Department is conducting a strategic planning process to set our goals for the next five years.  Part of that process is gathering input from our community and in order achieve that we have a survey that can be accessed on our website  We are asking anyone interested in providing feedback to complete the survey by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 17th, 2012.

The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a dog that bit a woman on Hudson Street, Ithaca.  This occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2012.  The dog appeared to be a medium sized black and white pit bull or pit bull cross. It was being walked on a leash by a young man appearing approximately 20 years old.

The Tompkins County Board of Health will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9 at the Tompkins County Health Department. The Board will resume its regularly scheduled meeting time next month.

Are you considering whether or not to get a flu shot this year? Here’s an easy answer: Everyone, Every Year (Everyone over the age of 6 months). This is the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD). A flu shot is the best protection against the flu — it protects you and limits the spread of flu to others, particularly infants under the age of 6 months who are too young to be immunized.

Lyme Disease is on the rise in Tompkins County. The number of cases has steadily increased in the past few years the Tompkins County Health Department reports. Karen Bishop, Community Health Nurse Supervisor noted that in 2006 there were 2 cases; in 2010 there were 70 and 107 in 2011. “But the actual number of cases exceeds the official count because most cases are not confirmed through a lab test,” she added.

Tompkins County is under a heat advisory with temperatures expected today and tomorrow in the mid-90’s. The combination of heat and humidity will create heat indices near or just above 100 degrees. These extreme temperatures can be dangerous to health.

The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a dog that bit a young woman while running on a wooded trail off the East Hill Recreation Trail, near Snyder Hill Road. This occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 3, 2012.

The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a dog that may have bit a man on his hip on Pine Tree Road, in front of the horse barn. This occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2012.
