Tompkins County residents may have heard recent media reports of the death of a 4 year-old Westchester County boy who died as a result of complications from the flu. The boy had not received the flu vaccine and had been previously healthy.

You’re invited to stop by the Health Department at 55 Brown Road (near the airport) on Saturday, November 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and bring your family and friends. Appointments are not necessary.

As of August 1st, a new city ordinance went into effect making many outdoor areas in the city of Ithaca smoke-free.

In celebration of the new ordinance, Tobacco Free Tompkins, a program of the Tompkins County Health Department will be hosting a celebration on Thursday, August 26th at 5:00 p.m.

Last April, Ithaca’s Common Council passed a city ordinance adopting outdoor smoking regulations to its municipal code. On August 1, 2010, the new city ordinance will be going into effect making portions of the Commons, City parks, TCAT shelters, playgrounds, public events, and other public outdoor areas smoke-free.

The Tompkins County Health Department is moving from its current location on Harris B Dates Drive to 55 Brown Road, Ithaca, New York. The move will be effective Monday, July 19, 2010.

Services will be limited Friday, July 16 through early the following week. Telephone numbers, fax numbers and emails will remain the same.

The heat emergency cooling center located at Ithaca’s Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) will remain open Thursday, July 8 to assist people in need during the current heat wave.

The cooling center is open until 7:00 p.m. today, and will reopen from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
