Media Statement from TCHD: NYS Monkeypox Tracker Removing One Positive Case, Additional New Positive Case

(Ithaca, N.Y., September 1, 2022) -- The New York State Department of Health has informed the Tompkins County Health Department that one of the reported positive monkeypox cases for Tompkins County was a false positive and will be removed from the New York State tracker. The false positive likely resulted from a commercial lab test identifying a different virus in the orthopox family, a subsequent test for monkeypox at the CDC has resulted negative. TCHD is in contact with the individual and has communicated the updated test information from the CDC.

On September 1, NYS is also reporting an additional new case of monkeypox in a Tompkins County resident, the total number of local cases on the NYS tracker will stay at three.
