Introduction to the HHW Program

Heart Check Questions

Forty-seven Tompkins County employers were interviewed between March 23 and July 11, 2000, using the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Heart Check survey.

The survey is a review of employee wellness and health promotion programs at the worksite.

Cultural and environmental supports for healthy living, which have been in place over the past two years, are tallied in the survey.

The Health Promotion Program, Tompkins County Health Department conducted the local interviews as part of an initiative by the New York State Healthy Heart Program. A total of over 700 worksites are expected to be surveyed state-wide.

The 250-question Heart Check survey looks at the ways in which a workplace environment supports employee wellness and healthy living. Information about worksite smoking policies, nutritional and physical activity opportunities available through the employer, and the organization’s administrative ability — or “readiness” — to support workplace-based wellness programs is considered. Stress reduction and health screening testing are also part of the survey.

Scoring the Survey

Using a checklist approach, Heart Check tallies the number of ways a worksite has promoted healthy living for employees over the last 2 years through policies, opportunities and administrative means. There are a total of 226 possible points. The score for a worksite is recorded as the percent (%) of total points tallied out of the total possible points.

Considering Categories for Wellness

The survey is organized into seven categories, each representing a different way of supporting wellness and encouraging actions conducive to a healthy lifestyle within the worksite environment. In this survey one category is not considered more or less important than another as an opportunity for supporting wellness. Scores for individual categories represent the worksite’s point total as a percent of total possible points for that category. Category scores can be compared to each other in order to find areas of relative strength and weakness.

Who Was Surveyed

The sample of Tompkins County worksites -- selected at random by the NYSDOH -- ranged from 30 to 785 full and part-time workers. Half of the worksites surveyed reported fewer than 125 employees. Eight different industry categories were represented. Service and educational organizations dominated, followed by manufacturing, retail, government and healthcare.
