On Wednesday the Tompkins County Recycling and Solid Waste Center received four total loads of acceptable solid waste as part of the City of Ithaca’s cleanup of encampment sites near Brindley Street. Tompkins County expects additional similar loads this week. Recycling and Materials Management staff as well as Casella facilities staff inspected materials delivered to the facility on Wednesday and have confirmed compliance with permit requirements. Unacceptable materials including sharps and fuel containers had been removed from the waste before its arrival at the facility and the City of Ithaca is aware that they must comply with DEC regulations for proper disposal of sharps and other hazardous waste.
Tompkins County estimates that 25 tons of waste are to be delivered to the facility in total, with the waiver of associated fees to be considered by the Health and Human Services Committee of the Tompkins County Legislature following a request by the City.
Commercial waste delivered to the facility must be free of medical, liquid and hazardous materials. Electronic items are not accepted with waste or single-stream recyclable materials and have the potential for causing serious fires.
