Dan Cogan works as an engineer at a downtown engineering
firm doing energy conservation and research. Dan currently
lives with his wife and dog in the Fall Creek neighborhood
of Ithaca, and commutes to work daily on foot. Dan walks to
work because, "I can get to work in less than 10 minutes,
and I don't have to deal with parking or traffic".
Dan is also an avid bicycle rider, and can be seen regularly
on his bicycle down by the City golf course and farmer's market
exercising his dog, Quincy. Dan has lived in the City since
he came to Tompkins County, except for the year that he lived
in Enfield. During that time, Dan worked at CBORD out by the
airport. He rode his bicycle 10 miles to work one way year
round, even on rainy days. The commute typically took 30 minutes
[I cannot really remember, but 30 minutes sounds about right].
Dan enjoyed this commute because, "I was keeping a car
off the road, and I still had control over when I could come
and go." The availability of a shower at his place of
work increased the convenience of his ride to work.
Dan often rode home from work as well, but would typically
avoid the steep climb up Bostwick Road on his return trip
to Enfield. He would typically arrange to meet his partner
on the way home from work, and she would provide him and his
bicycle with a ride up the hill in their car fitted with a
bike rack. Dan continued to ride his bike to work at CBORD
after they moved back into the City, until he left in December
2000.
