Meeting Notes

CYCC Meeting, Feb. 9, 2006
8:30–10:00 a.m., Old Jail House Conference Rm

Next Meeting: March 7 (Tuesday) 3:30-5:00

Present: Jennifer, David, Kent, Lois, Sue, Nicole, Jan

• Bikes Belong Grants Program offers up to $10,000 for groups promoting
bicycle use. Application deadlines are quarterly: In 2006, they are Feb.
27, May 29, Aug. 28, Nov. 27. We discussed applying for two potential
projects: 1) feasibility study for hill lift for bicycles; 2) newly formed
Black Diamond Trail Supporters Network.

• Black Diamond Trail Update: A group of more than BD Trail 20 supporters
has formed in the past two weeks, seven of whom met with Sue Poelvoorde,
Natural Resources Manager of the NYS Parks Finger Lakes Region, on Feb. 3,
for update, to express our eagerness, and to offer support. In short,
Poelvoorde said that the Master Plan for the BDTrail (from Taughannock
Park to Buttermilk Park) will be completed in fiscal year 2006-2007, and
work on the trail will begin in 2007-2008, starting from Gorge Road moving
south to Cass Park. There remains only one 60’ segment of the trail that
has not been eased to the Parks for trail use; it lies between Cass Park
and Glenwood Heights Road. If you would like to join this group of
supporters, send an email message to Jan at jz17@cornell.edu.

• An international group, Transportation Research Board (TRB), held its
85th annual meeting in Washington, DC, last month. Lois attended, along
with 10,000 others. To read the papers presented at that meeting, go to:
http://www.trb.org/meeting/ and from there, click on the Interactive
Preliminary Program link. You can search for specific topics, for example
- car sharing, or pedestrians, or bicycles, or planning, etc. Or, Lois
has all the papers on a CD, which you may arrange to borrow.

• Safe Route 2 Schools (SR2S) in Ithaca: Justin Booth, trained as a
NYState SR2S facilitator, will be in Ithaca on March 24 (Fri) to lead a
Workshop for teachers and administrators on SR2S, sponsored by Boces and
Cornell. The formal workshop will run from 8:30 – 10:45 a.m., after which
Booth will be available for other activities, to be arranged by Lois. We
discussed options, including using one school as a field site for
afternoon program – one idea includes a walk-about capped by a panel of
parents, teachers, students. BJM and Northeast were raised as examples of
two schools with distinctive transportation challenges. Contact Lois with
any ideas. Think about how CYCC can be involved. Read more about SR2S on
our CYC website.

• It’s time to register for the Ithaca Festival Parade – who wants to take
charge?

Note submitted respectfully by Jan
