The Curb Your Car Coalition Meeting was held at 9:00 a.m.
on Friday, April 29, 2005 at the Old Jail House on Court Street.
Present: Michael Smith, Lois Chaplin, Jennifer Dotson, Sue
Powell, Yael Levitte, Tania Schusler, Jan Zeserson, David
Kay, Fernando Aragon, Vikki Armstrong
Earth Day Debriefing:
1. The City map was a good draw, and some visitors to the
booth left good suggestions for bike rack locations and dangerous
intersections. Jan will compile suggestions.
2. General consensus of booth-staffers was that there was
too much information on the table, OR that the information
just needed better organization, with clearer focal points,
because color brochures/bookmarks, items all grabbed some
attention.
3. Pedometer (count your steps to there) was a bit too much
to make work in way we intended (maybe due to foul weather?).
Got abandoned early on. Same with the "footprint to walk
to work" paper scroll--too windy and cold to keep it
in place.
4. For next tabling event, we need a big banner and a better,
easier-to-read map, maybe of the whole county.
5. Several visitors to the booth asked about bike trails around
the city, which led us to topic of creating a good map showing
trails and routes for bicyclists. Several CYC members are
interested in working on creating one. Dave Nutter apparently
produced a booklet years ago, and it was agreed to start with
that if it still exists. David thinks it should not be difficult
to find funding for such a map project.
6. Raffle: several people left email contact address.
Tania will send an email to all of them asking if they want
to be added to CYC listserve. It was agreed not to put any
names on a contact list without notification (even snail-mail
addresses) since that wasn't part of the raffle deal.
Thanks, David, for contributing the pedometer. Questions:
Who responded to the raffle winner? Some rafflers wrote suggestions/comments
on back of raffle ticket. Who will compile these? Do any need
response from us?
Ithaca Festival Parade (June 2, Thursday)--
1. The CYC Banner cannot be found. Passing the hat produced
$65 for David to recreate that Banner from original artwork.
Original cost was $70.
2. It was agreed that CYC parade contingent should also carry
a banner expressing support of Mayor's initiative: something
simple like "We support the Mayor's Healthy City Initiative".
David agreed to create that, too.
3. Looking like a unit in the parade: put banner in front;
group around the PVC "bus"; end with TCAT bike rack
demo.
4. Sue displayed the "It's a Breeze" logo design
for t-shirts. Met with rave review. Sue will create iron-on
transfer sheets or t-shirts upon request ($4 per t-shirts,
$?? per transfer sheet). Sue also has bookmarks, will email
both t-shirt and bookmark pdf files to list and also to Nicole
for posting on website so any of us can print some.
5. Two more meetings scheduled for detailed planning of Festival
Parade: April 13 (Fri) 9:00 and April 25 (Wed) 3:30, both
at Old Jail House.
Bicycle Valet Parking at the Ithaca Festival (Sunday
at Stewart Park only)--
Vicky Kyser (Ithaca Festival director) asked CYCC about this.
Jennifer will coordinate this effort, starting with getting
it mentioned in the Festival Schedule. Jennifer wants to have
some portion of any "tips" we get for this project
in exchange for coordination work. David also raised idea
of bike rickshaw ferrying people between the park and parking
lot.
Ithaca Festival Sunday Sustainability Fair--
Vicky Kyser asked CYCC to participate in this, too. We need
to discuss this at one of the future Festival planning meetings.
Odds and Ends:
1. Talk of forming a citizens' group to support Black Diamond
Trail from Cass Park north.
2. Website needs updating.
3. Jennifer is pursuing creating new organization (with herself
as staff) to make sustainable transportation projects happen
(with more flexibility than current governmental structures).
Curious about best connection with CYCC, best structure, and
wants ideas from CYCC members about anything related (projects,
etc.).
