Alert! Important Public Meeting:
The Pedestrian Awareness Committee (PAC) invites feedback
to its (just released) 12-page Preliminary Report on pedestrian
travel in Ithaca. The meeting is June 21 (this coming Tuesday!),
5:00 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers. Lois was one of the
PAC drafters of this Report. We’re all urged to attend
to give and hear comments. The Report is available now --
online at www.cityofithaca.org/announcements
Parade Debriefing:
1. Despite best intentions, our contingent was still too spread
out. Next year, try having the bus lead since it’s the
slowest element.
2. The “Thank you” banner at rear of bus is fading,
needs brightening before next year.
3. Need a place (other than Yael’s basement) to store
the bus. Sue’s barn is a possibility. Who can transport
it? Ideally, bus should not be disassembled because it’s
getting wobbly, but…
4. All elements of the parade need a clear message. Case in
point: Tina and the elephant needed a message like the dragon’s:
“Traffic Dragon you down?” in order to keep our
whole show cohesive. The elephant was great attention-grabbing
crowd-pleaser, but need to add a tie-in message next year.
5. Start earlier to ensure that we get the TCAT bus. We don’t
know what happened to it this year – could have been
simply a manpower shortage??
6. We’ll consider making black & white bookmarks
in future – easier to print, less expensive.
7. Good slogan: “Burn Fat, Not Oil” with a bicycle
graphic. Get it? Burn your own fat riding a bike instead of
burning oil.
Next CYC Public Appearance:
1. After discussing merits and demerits of participating in
September’s Youth Day (contact: Rick Manning); Safe
Walk to School in October (contact: Fernando); or the Family
Reading Partnership in November (contact: David Kay), we concluded
that Family Reading Partnership event in November is best
opportunity. Merits are that it is a huge audience of parents
and children, very well organized, and CYC members have more
time to donate in November than in September. Possibly, we’ll
also participate in Safe Walk to School initiative in October.
2. Prep work for Family Reading Partnership event: Next meeting
(Aug 16), we’ll brainstorm about display ideas, bearing
in mind that we should tie into reading theme.
David, please come with any particulars you know about this
event, e.g., size of the booth allotted to participants like
us, date of application to participate, etc.
3. Safe Walk to Schools. At next meeting (Aug 16), we’ll
decide whether to participate or not. Before then, we need
to find out particulars:
a. Who knows the names of the teachers at Cayuga Heights School
and Trumansburg School who are actively involved?
b. Who will contact them to see how we can hook into their
efforts?
c. Flyers: Fernando will dig out last year’s flyer and
bring it to August meeting. Last year, CYC prepared a flyer
that members delivered to various schools. We need to be better
(earlier) organized this year if we want to distribute those
flyers since some schools allow such deliveries only on certain
days of the week.
“Critical Mass” Bike Rides
Corinna Anderson would like to show interested CYC members
a video documentary about Critical Mass Rides, called “Still
We Ride.” She’ll send an announcement of place/time
via a CYC member to the listserve. A discussion of “Critical
Mass” concept continued after our official meeting ended.
As she listened to CYC members’ arguments against this
concept, Corinna urged us to join at least once to get insider’s
perspective. Apparently, an Ithaca area contingent meets on
the last Friday of every month, at the Commons UPS Store,
at 4:30, for a Critical Mass Ride.
Next Meeting: August 16 (Tues), 3:30, Old Court House
Basement
