NEXT CYCC MEETING: MARCH 31, 2004 OLD JAIL

Two of Yael’s students, Gregory and Nicole, explained the walkability projects that they are working on in Yael’s class. One group is developing GIS map of walking routes (utilitarian and scenic) and intends to create pamphlets using the map that also include written directions and accessibility ratings. This map could also go on CYCC web site as a PDF. Another group is conducting a cost comparison of walking, biking, public transit, and driving for 4 common utilitarian routes (e.g., Cornell-Commons, Commons-Wegman’s). Students selected routes using info gathered from an unscientific survey of people at the mall, Northside P&C, Southside Community Center, etc. They will also email the CYCC list serve for feedback on the routes selected. These are 2 of 4 CYCC related projects underway in Yael’s class. The other two are focused on a smart growth index and car-sharing. A 5th group is looking at the feasibility of a trolley. We decided to organize a public presentation of the students’ work – to occur the evening of April 27.

CYCC will be at Earth Day at DeWitt Park on April 25. Another opportunity to showcase students’ work. RIBS will do bike maintenance.

Jeff Olson visit was productive. Tompkins County has been selected as a pilot for Olson’s research project, Initiative for Healthy Infrastructure. Article on visit appeared in the Mar 3 Ithaca Times.

Robert Smith Award given by Trust Company funds a student to work on community project. Opportunity to build on student projects underway. CRP will match funds ($1500) for student summer projects. The City has expressed interest in a Transportation Management Agency that would assess and manage travel demand downtown – e.g., census of employees, who works where, match folks for carpools, identify buildings with showers, provide policy incentives, options open to employers that they were not aware of, etc. – similar to what Cornell does. Jennifer will contact Tim Logue (sp?) to inform of Smith Award. City could apply for student to do initial research. Could also connect with other programs like Cornell Tradition for students.

Ithaca Parade – June 3, 2004 –Ideas: Bike Bossa, Pedestrian Polka (request to march next to the Scandinavian Fiddlers; a cardboard TCAT bus – invite the crowd to participate by hopping on the bus; Give Your Car a Rest – with car in a nightgown followed by alternatives – bike/tandem, unicycle, walk, bus, rollerblade, skate, car-sharing, kids and parents walking. Pass out pamphlets developed by Yael’s students on cost comparison and walking routes. Have big signs stating messages. Michael Smith and David Kay will take lead on organizing with subgroup of folks interested (Rod, Tania, others? – Kirsten getting that list to David).

Spring CYCC Event – We’ll hold a CYC Week the week of April 25. This includes Earth Day and the public presentation by Yael’s students on April 27. There is also a Critical Mass ride on April 29, and the Cornell Bike-Pedestrian Safety Committee meets on April 29. Rick Manning is willing to lead a walk on the canal walkway. Contact others who might hold an event that we could publicize as part of the week’s activities. Email the list serve when dates are confirmed so that we don’t overbook certain dates. Amy in Sue’s shop can work on brochure. Ted to post info on web site. Last year marketing was a challenge. David has contacts with Ithaca Journal. Jennifer will contact Wendy Skinner with Ithaca Times.
