NEXT MEETING: Old Jail Conference Room,
3:15, Dec 11
Jeff Olson, Healthy Heart Program contractor, SUNY Albany.
Project called initiative for healthy infrastructure,
(see http://www.albany.edu/gp/iHi/iHi_index.htm). He’s
willing to come to Ithaca early next year at little or
no cost. Visit Yael’s class, do a downtown CYC event?
See if he might select Tompkins as a case study county?
Mark Fenton of Walking magazine waiting for response
to Ted’s email
Susan Shaheen on car sharing nothing to report
Betty Falcao asked for support for letter of intent for
a grant. Full application, if invited, would be due January
15. CYC voted to endorse idea. Rod will pass word to her.
Goal of getting something out each month. Are there outstanding
issues/letters? Margot tried to get a letter in, will
work on cutting size down. Lois/David worked on one on
sidewalks (Lois will resend to David) We could contact
Wendy Skinner again for assistance on writing if need
editorial assistance.
List of talking points we could all use would be good;
also generic brochure (Lois will contact Susan about brochure)
Opportunity exists with downtown traffic problems for
CYC to get involved. How? The existing shuttle service
is underpublicized. Could passes be made more widely available,
publicized? Some mayoral candidates talked about eliminating
one way streets.
Could/should CYC come up with a proactive agenda, plan,
offer positive options
Capitalize on the problems posed for auto traffic by
offering, publicizing alternatives.
Discussion on how to influence perceptions and behavior.
Connect problems. Issue of absence of showers at workplace.
Other disincentives. One on one contact important
Letter writing, publicity one option. Glover idea at
first meeting on educational pamphlet on how long it takes
to get from one point to another in town (time of day,
mode of transport). Other publicity. Could we solicit
public feedback on solutions, perhaps on website? Discussion
board on creative ways to get to work barriers?
Core group will take lead on strategizing, meeting with
key people (eg Gary Ferguson, others) . Jennifer will
convene David, Ted, Michael, post time to list for others
interested.
We should focus in on ways to get around with a day,
week format. Or not… Lots of good ways to reach
people. Need to think about key purposes, audiences first
Next meeting should focus on planning events, things
to do. Start with discussion of what our message is, who
do we want to reach… Do this before the smaller
items on agenda
Should get out better publicity about CYC day itself.
Ad in paper? More effort at counting participants. Focus
on downtown? Include other parts of city and county too,
however? Partner with downtown merchants ideas to get
people downtown without cars, help market? Some transportation
analogy to the 5 cent greenstar discount if you bring
your own bag…
Debbie Gross, new town of Dryden environmental planner
working on development of multiuse trails. Healthy heart
grant. Good person to inform about CYC Fernando will.
Saratoga recently promoted walking event at local farmers
market, sold pedometers, etc with health connection (hospital
involvement). Funded by ??? David will find out more.
Broome County has great promotion based on BC comic strip.
Busses with BC characters. Home of strip author, so special
opportunity
Deb Spicer (?) in NYS DOH is contact/has resources, work
on Physical Activity Plan. Opportunity for us? Lois will
keep in touch
Margot good UN Car Free website (David will send Margot
list of websites for her to review)
