An asthma action plan is a written strategy to manage an individual’s
asthma.
Every person who needs daily medication to control asthma should
have an asthma action plan. If it is for a child, there should
be a copy for the parent, the school or daycare provider and
any other person providing care of the child.
An asthma action plan should clearly state the daily plan to
follow when asthma is under control. It should define asthma
control and identify symptoms that signal an asthma episode.
It also should give instructions for care during an asthma episode.
An asthma action plan gives directions for daily control medications
and for quick-relief medication.
The newly revised (Dec. 2009) Tompkins County Asthma Action Plan is the result of the Asthma Action Committee's extensive reviews and discussions with local practitioners. It is designed to be used and recognized by school nurses, family providers, and hospital staff in Tompkins County.
