Winners Announced for Second Annual Tompkins County Voting Sticker Contest

The Tompkins County Board of Elections is announcing the winners of the 2024 voting sticker contests. Over 1,700 votes were cast by the public, selecting Ahava Sapp’s “Future Voter” design featuring the “S.S. Ballot Vote Boat” and Ruby LeCroy’s “I Voted” design featuring a frog on a flower.

Logo Description automatically generated with medium confidenceThe contests set out to increase civic engagement and participation by young people in Tompkins County. “I Voted” stickers will be distributed to all general election voters this November, “Future Voter” stickers will be handed out to young people joining their families at the polls to learn more about democracy and voting.

The winners will receive copies of their winning sticker design and a proclamation from the Tompkins County Legislature later this year.

Ahava’s design says, “I’m on the Vote Boat,” and features the S.S. Ballot with an American flag as the boat’s sail. Ahava is a second grade student at Belle Sherman Elementary School and shared that she likes to read, dance, and play basketball. Ahava always goes with her mom to vote.

Ruby’s design features a frog seated happily on a flower, with the words “I Voted” bold across the top of the sticker. Ruby is a sixth grade student at Boynton Middle School. Ruby shared that they love frogs and drawing.

Republican Elections Commissioner Alanna Congdon stated, “Congratulations to both students for their amazing artwork and to everyone who participated in the contests this year. The Board of Elections is so proud to be able to encourage civic engagement in this way. We saw over 100 submissions including art from nearly every school in the County and from students at every grade level.”

Democratic Elections Commissioner Steve DeWitt stated, “This has been a great way to get the word out about elections. Voter turnout is important for every community, we’re lucky that in Tompkins County we will be giving out two beautiful stickers this year to those who show up to the polls. Kudos to the artists and to everyone from teachers to family members who helped encourage submissions this year.”
