(ITHACA, NY, December 21, 2023) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a voluntary recall of Quaker Oaks Company specific granola bars and granola cereals for suspected Salmonella contamination. This recall includes granola bars that were distributed as part of bulk variety snack mixes.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
If you or a family member are experiencing any of these symptoms, please seek guidance from your healthcare provider. For severe illness, hospitalization may be required. Dial 911 for emergency assistance.
