The mission of the Highway Division is to provide highway and bridge construction, maintenance, and emergency services safely, effectively, and efficiently for our local and traveling public customers, while promoting self-esteem and growth as individuals.
Road Maintenance staff construct, maintain, and repair roads, maintain intersections and roadside drainage, eliminate roadside hazards, and repair guardrails. The Tompkins County Highway Division also maintains more than 4,500 signs.

- Eastbound traffic (away from Ithaca/Cayuga Heights) will travel on the single open lane of Hanshaw Road within that stretch, and should be alert, as the usable lane will shift from side to side.
- A stretch of Hanshaw Road will be closed to all westbound traffic, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Local traffic is not exempted, and there is no change in the traffic pattern at night or on weekends. If you live at or need to visit a property within the construction zone area, you must still approach our destination from the west and proceed east. Do not travel westbound on the road, even for what you may consider a short distance. Following the proscribed traffic pattern is essential to everyone’s safety.
