Tompkins County Highway Division
Jeffrey Smith, Highway Director
Carl Martel, P.E., Assistant Highway Director

The Highway Division maintains close to 302 highway miles and 109 bridges in Tompkins County.  The mission of the Highway Division is to provide highway and bridge construction, maintenance, and emergency services safely, effectively, and efficiently for our local and traveling public customers, while promoting self-esteem and growth as individuals.

Road Maintenance staff construct, maintain, and repair roads, maintain intersections and roadside drainage, eliminate roadside hazards, and repair guardrails.  The Tompkins County Highway Division also maintains more than 4,500 signs.

ROAD/BRIDGE CLOSING(S):

Bridge - Red Mill Road Bridge - NO THROUGH TRAFFIC
Dates - Thursday, December 8, 2005 - indefinitely.
Time - Beginning at 3:30 p.m. on 12/8
Reason - Unsafe for vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic.

Road - Hanshaw Road - WESTBOUND TRAFFIC TO BE CLOSED
Dates - Beginning Monday, April 21, 2014
Time - Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on 4/21 through mid/end-September 2014 (one-way traffic) / Project Completion end-October 2014
Reason - Road reconstruction including: new pavement, 4' paved shoulders on both sides of the road, new drainage piping, a separate paved walkway on the north side of the road from Community Corners to Sapsucker Woods Road, and traffic signal equipment at the Warren Road intersection.
Section - Between Sapsucker Woods Road and Pleasant Grove Road
Notes - The westbound lane will be closed to all traffic. Those traveling westbound (toward Ithaca/Cayuga Heights) should take Rt. 13 south to North Triphammer Road, to access Hanshaw Road beyond the construction zone.
  • Eastbound traffic (away from Ithaca/Cayuga Heights) will travel on the single open lane of Hanshaw Road within that stretch, and should be alert, as the usable lane will shift from side to side.
  • A stretch of Hanshaw Road will be closed to all westbound traffic, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Local traffic is not exempted, and there is no change in the traffic pattern at night or on weekends. If you live at or need to visit a property within the construction zone area, you must still approach our destination from the west and proceed east. Do not travel westbound on the road, even for what you may consider a short distance. Following the proscribed traffic pattern is essential to everyone’s safety.
  • The Tompkins County Highway Division advises travelers to watch for and follow the posted detour signs for the duration of the project.
