DISCLAIMER: Espitech Air Products disclaims all warranties, implied or otherwise, that anyone (non-smoker or smoker) who installs our air purifiers, air cleaners, or air scrubbers as an alternative to seeking a smokefree environment will be protected from the health risks caused by exposure to second hand smoke.

• Smoke and invisible vapor from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes are some of the main causes of odors in smoking areas in restaurants, bars and other public and private smoking areas. The odor is persistent and difficult to eliminate, even with a large amount of ventilation. However, it can be effectively reduced, if not removed completely, with a properly designed air purification equipment ...

• Smoke (fumes) from tobacco smoke creates an irritating smog-like blue haze, which will disappear, but odors and chemicals associated with smoking will linger for days.

• If an impregnated media filtering unit is already running when smoke starts, the smoke and the vapor is eliminated and an odor free condition can be obtained after smoking stops. This always depends on a variety of factors: sufficient carbon modules, strategic placement, appropriate matching filters, adequate maintenance and operating modules 24 hours a day.

• The elimination of the less acrid tar and chemical odor, and the reduction of the visible mist of liquid tar require little time in most settings. The removal of the remaining odor, which comes from tar and chemical re-emissions from walls, carpets, draperies and furniture, may take several hours to many days, depending on smoking volumes.

• For optimum effectiveness one should run the air purifier, air cleaner, air scrubber on low or medium setting continuously as tobacco smoke clings to and coats most hard and soft surfaces. When premises are closed, the air purifier, air cleaner, air scrubber should continue to operate to adsorb the residual tobacco odors and chemicals.

• Second hand smoke has been classified by the U.S. EPA as a Class A carcinogen- a toxin known to cause cancer in humans and which has no safe level of exposure. Breathing secondhand smoke can be harmful to children's health including asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis and pneumonia and ear infections... | more |

DISCLAIMER: "No air filtration or air purification system has been designed that can eliminate all the harmful constituents of secondhand smoke. A reduction of the harmful constituents of secondhand smoke does not protect against the disease and death caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. The U.S. Surgeon General has determined secondhand smoke to cause heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory illness."

• Second Hand Smoke has been classified by the EPA as a "Group A" human carcinogen meaning there is no safe level of exposure!

• ...air purification technology is rapidly gaining ground and ...our systems have been shown... to substantially (98%) reduce the concentrations of all aerosols from .04 (virus sized) to 3 microns. [While] this includes a large portion of the components in second hand smoke... this reduction cannot protect users of our equipment nor anyone else's from this environmental toxic carcinogen since any exposure is dangerous to human health.

The following information is exerpted from the tobacco smoke applications page of the IQAir web site. (accessed June 9, 2004. Underlining added.) Note: this is the unit described in the AllergyBuyersClub exerpt, above.)

The removal of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a challenge for any air cleaning device due to the complex nature of ETS and the high rate of generation in rooms with multiple smokers.

In order to be able to deal effectively with ETS, the air cleaning device must be able to capture both particles (seen as smoke) and gaseous chemicals (experienced as odors). Look for the following features... :

• high efficiency for small particles (tobacco smoke particles are very small: mean diameter of 0.1 micron)
• high particle holding capacity (ETS particles can fill up filters very quickly)
• wide spectrum gas phase filter (activated carbon alone will not capture all chemical compounds)
• large gas phase filter (weight of gas phase filter is directly related to the holding capacity for gaseous compounds)
• high-efficiency pre-filter (significantly increases life and effectiveness of gas phase filter)
• high air delivery (the air in a room should be cleaned several times an hour)
