Weekend Winter Storm Will Impact Curbside Recycling

Food Scraps Recycling Drop Spots Closed Sunday

With extreme winter weather conditions impacting our area over the next several days, the Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management reminds residents there will be delays in curbside recycling collection on Monday. Updates on the status of curbside pick-up will be posted at www.recycletompkins.org.

Additionally, this Sunday’s food scraps recycling drop spots at the Cayuga Heights Village Hall and Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ithaca will be closed for the safety of our attendants. Residents are encouraged to utilize any of the Saturday drop spots as an alternative, or the public drop-off at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center.  A complete list of locations can be found at www.recycletompkins.org/dropspots.

Because of the range of severity and duration in weather disruptions, it is not possible to predict when a recycling collection route might be completed. Residents should still set out material for their regularly scheduled pick up day. Every effort will be made to return to a normal collection schedule as soon as the weather permits.

Residents can do their part to prevent additional delays and interruption of service by keeping their recycling bins accessible. When possible, please remove snow and extra material from around the bins. Please ensure containers are placed in an accessible location, such as an area by the end of a driveway clear of the road or street (including bike lanes). Secure materials to protect them from windy conditions, and place bins on a level and hard surface if possible.

If residents feel their recycling was missed, after checking for updates on the website, please call the Recycling and Materials Management office at (607) 273-6632.

Residents also have the choice of using the Recycling and Solid Waste Center at 160 Commercial Avenue in Ithaca. The hours are Monday thru Saturday from 7am to 3:30pm. There is no charge to drop off recyclables at the RSWC.
