Panel to Discuss Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

Legalizing recreational marijuana is being widely debated in the halls of government throughout New York State. With our neighboring states Vermont and Massachusetts having already made the leap to legal retail sales, could our state be next?

Join us for a community conversation on Monday, April 29, 2019 from 7:00pm-8:45pm at the Tompkins County Public Library in the Borg Warner Room. The panel discussion is presented by The League of Women Voters of Tompkins County.

Dr. William Klepack, Medical Director of the Tompkins County Health Department, will speak on the panel, as will Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne and District Attorney Matt Van Houten..

“This is an important discussion to have now because New York State seems to be on the road to legalizing “marijuana,” Dr. Klepack states.  "However, in reality it is about legalizing THC, the principle psychoactive chemical in the Cannabis plant. Especially because THC can be sold in highly concentrated forms we must consider what regulations to protect the public’s health (including those concerning product concentration, packaging, and marketing) should be implemented as we move forward.”

Other speakers include: Jim Sharp, Ph.D., Director Emeritus, Van Dyke Addiction Treatment Center; and Nellie Brown, MS, CIH, Director of Workplace Health & Safety Programs, ILR, Cornell University..
