Tompkins County Public Library welcomes the 2019 Tompkins County Poet Laureate, Melissa Tuckey, for a poetry workshop on Tuesday, June 11, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, in the Library’s Tompkins Trust Company Study Room.
This Food Justice Poetry Writing Workshop led by Melissa Tuckey will explore food, social justice, and poetry. Participants will read culturally and stylistically diverse poems that connect the reader to farmers, cooks, soil, and microbes, and will write new poems in response. The group will explore both food and poetry as nourishment.
This workshop is meant for writers at all levels, from published writers to those who would like to become better writers. Participants should bring their favorite writing implements.
Tompkins County Poet Laureate Melissa Tuckey is a co-founder and former board member of Split This Rock who serves as the Coordinator of Split This Rock’s Eco-Justice Poetry Project, editor of Ghost Fishing: An Eco-Justice Poetry Anthology, forthcoming from University of Georgia Press. Tuckey is author of Tenuous Chapel (May 2013), selected by Charles Simic for the First Book Award at ABZ Press, and Rope as Witness (chapbook: Pudding House Press, 2007). Tuckey has a background in community organizing and non-profit development, and holds an MFA from George Mason University. She teaches writing workshops in universities, public schools, nonprofit organizations, and other community settings. More information can be found at http://www.melissatuckey.net.
