Details on the Planned Public Safety Response to Reported Gatherings that Violate New York State Executive Orders on Mask-Wearing, Social Distancing, and Density

Tompkins County officials are sharing details on the planned public safety response to reported gatherings that violate New York State executive orders on mask-wearing, social distancing, and density.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with other agencies and public safety officials from local higher education institutions will respond to reports initially with an education-based approach. The Sheriff’s Office will be the primary response agency throughout Tompkins County, including the city of Ithaca on all calls related to gatherings.

If repeat violations occur, fines may be issued. If individuals at the residence are students, their college or university will be notified of the gathering and may take further action pursuant to their regulations.
Individuals who observe a gathering where mask-wearing or social distancing are not being observed, and/or involve over 50 individuals can call a non-emergency dispatch line at (607) 273-8000.

Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne stated, “Our primary goals are to encourage positive behavior, and to provide education when we can. We know that wearing a mask, reducing gathering sizes, and keeping six feet of distance can help stop the spread, and hope that everyone continues to take their responsibility to do so seriously.”
