Join the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council for its fall outreach program focusing on environmental justice — the confluence of environmentalism and social justice. The discussion will focus on how these issues intersect and how pollution and its detrimental effects disproportionately impact low-income communities and communities of color. Richard Rivera from Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources (OAR) of Tompkins County will start off the evening’s discussion by sharing his on-the-ground perspective and experiences working with displaced individuals living in the local homeless encampment commonly known as “The Jungle.” Rebecca Evans and Anne Rhodes will round out the conversation speaking to the history of environmental justice and how its dynamics continue to play out beyond our local borders — especially as a public health issue —in communities everywhere.
Presenters
Richard Rivera works in community outreach at OAR as a program coordinator for the Endeavor House and as an outreach navigation coordinator. Additionally, Richard works for Ultimate Reentry Opportunity (URO), which is part of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Tompkins County. Richard is committed to uplifting the voices of people living locally in the homeless encampment.
Anne Rhodes is a community activist focused on moving Tompkins County forward in reducing fossil fuel use, undermining structural racism, and building a community where everyone can thrive. She works part time with Cornell Cooperative Extension on energy issues and Building Bridges, the Rural Listening Project, and the Tompkins County chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice.
Rebecca Evans is the campus sustainability coordinator at Ithaca College, where she works with students to understand the full scope of holistic sustainability. She also works closely with the Sunrise Movement, Building Bridges, and Get Your GreenBack Tompkins.
