Health Department Seeks Information About a Dog to Rule Out Rabies Infection

(ITHACA, N.Y., October 11, 2019) — The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a dog that bit a person inside Pete’s Coin Laundry in the City of Ithaca. The bite occurred Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at around 6:20 p.m.

The dog is described as a brown and black dog resembling a larger beagle, with graying on the face, suggesting it is an older dog. The owner of the dog is a male, approximately 5’10” with short dark hair (see image below). The dog came out from under the table and bit a person.

The Department seeks to verify vaccination status and health of the biting dog over a ten-day period. If the dog can be located and observed to be healthy by the Department, the risk of rabies infection can be ruled out and rabies post-exposure treatment for the person who was bitten will not be necessary.

Anyone with information regarding this dog is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
