The Tompkins County Board of Health (BOH) is seeking applications to fill an at-large vacancy. Applicants must be Tompkins County residents. Deadline for applications is July 1, 2014. The BOH is a volunteer board that serves as the governing body for the Health Department.

Tompkins County Health Department is reporting an increase in early syphilis cases since the beginning of 2014 in the Central New York (CNY) fourteen county region, which includes Tompkins County. In the first four months of 2014 there have been approximately 30 cases in CNY, five of them in Tompkins County.

Rabies is a fatal neurologic disease. Already, there has been one confirmed rabid animal in Tompkins County (one raccoon) during the first three months of 2014. New York State Public Health Law requires all cats, dogs and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age, and failure to do so may result in the loss of the pet.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin today released county health rankings for most counties in the U.S., and Tompkins County was ranked the second healthiest county in New York State.

The New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) reports that influenza (flu) is widespread in New York State. Widespread is defined as increased or sustained numbers of lab-confirmed cases of influenza reported in at least 31 of 62 counties. Flu was reported in 53 counties including Tompkins, and all 5 boroughs of New York City for the week ending February 8, 2014.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is being offered in February by the Tompkins County Health Department and the Human Services Coalition. This is a year- long program beginning with 16 weekly sessions.

Statewide, flu was reported in 52 of the state's 62 counties, including all 5 boroughs of New York City for the week ending 12/28/13.
