TCHD must locate a dog that bit a man along the South Hill Recreation Trail, near the Six Mile Creek Reservoir, on Tues., Dec. 10, 2013, about 2:00 p.m. The dog resembled an Australian Shepard, and was with a girl about 10-15 years old.

National Influenza Immunization Week highlights the importance of flu vaccination for the best protection against the flu. Flu activity usually peaks in January or later in the U.S., so getting a flu vaccination in December or later will still provide protection this flu season.

The Tompkins County Health Department released the 2013–2017 Community Health Assessment (CHA) and the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The CHA is a profile of the current health of Tompkins County residents based on socioeconomic factors, key health indicators, local data, community resources and gaps, and the input of community partners. The CHIP identifies two priorities for community focus based on community input and data analysis: Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Substance Abuse is one priority, and Preventing Chronic Disease, the second.

November 12, 2013 – (Ithaca, NY) Flu immunizations will be available at the Tompkins County Health Department for children (six months and above) and adults from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16 at the Health Department on 55 Brown Road– near the airport. Appointments are preferred but walk – ins are welcome. There is plenty of free parking.

The Health Department must locate a dog that bit a woman jogging along the paved Cayuga Waterfront Trail (between the 0 & 2.5 mile markers) near the Dog Park at Treman Marina. The bite occurred Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, between 11:15am and 11:45am. The dog was reddish-gold and tall, resembling a Golden Retriever. The dog was being walked on a leash by a tall man who was walking alongside a shorter, blonde woman who was also walking a Golden Retriever.

Are you considering whether or not to get a flu shot this year? Here’s an easy answer: Everyone, Every Year (Everyone over the age of 6 months). This is the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD). A flu shot is the best protection against the flu — it protects you and limits the spread of flu to others.

Ted Schiele, Planner/Evaluator and Tobacco Control Program Coordinator was recognized recently by the New York State Department of Health in its Public Health Works! campaign.

The Tompkins County Health Department nominated Mr. Schiele in 2012 for his various contributions to the health and safety of Tompkins County residents. He joined the Department thirteen years ago in the Health Promotion Program where he has been involved in worksite wellness, emergency preparedness, and promotion of the Department’s many programs.

The Department’s answering service will receive phone calls. If there is an emergency, appropriate staff will be notified.
