The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that preventable injuries rank among the top 10 causes of death of people of all ages in the United States. Each year 150,000 people die from injuries and almost 30 million are injured seriously enough to go the emergency room. For example, in Tompkins County, falls are the top reason emergency medical services are called. In 2009 falls resulted in 1,107 out of 8,669 calls (13%).

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin today released county health rankings for most counties in the United States. Tompkins County ranked fourth in the ten healthiest counties in New York State.

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) has received several calls recently about the availability of Potassium Iodide (KI) pills related to the radiation emergency in Japan.  TCHD does not have KI pills and advises Tompkins County residents that there is no reason to purchase KI pills.

The Tompkins County Legislature has confirmed the appointment of  Frank Kruppa to the position of Public Health Director.  The appointment of Kruppa to the top position in the County’s Health Department comes after a year-long national search to replace former Director Alice Cole.

Tompkins County Health Department is canceling the following clinics due to the forecasted snow storm:

  • Tonight, Tuesday, February 1, Childbirth Education Class at the Health Department.

Temperatures are expected to be very cold this weekend, and Tompkins County Health Department is stressing that all residents take precautions to avoid exposure to extremely cold conditions which can lead to hypothermia.
