Trek Weeks

Creative arts

Stiller Zusman and Gwen Bullock will co-teach this art camp week, which combines Photo, Drawing and Painting both in the studio and on-location as we travel in the greater Ithaca area by foot and by bus. Our excursions for image gathering, art making and observation will be interspersed with time to work in our comfortable, well-equipped art studio. We plan to make use of Abovoagogo’s new digital projector to bring the photos we have taken to life, as inspirations for drawing, painting and collage. This will be an exciting week, filled with visual treats, adventures, and artwork of all kinds. There will be a maximum of 9 participants. Student must bring lunch. It is preferred that children have use of their own simple digital camera. They will also need to have the appropriate card readers or USB connectors for their cameras, so we can quickly download photos to the computer. There will be some cameras to share if this is not possible. Camp fee includes all art materials, bus fares and admission costs.

Ages: 6 to 18

Schedule: July 2, 3, 5 and 6 (no program on July 4th); August 6 – 10. 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cancellations accepted until 3 weeks prior to camp with a $75 registration fee non-refundable. Cancellations within 3 weeks of camp will be refunded only if the slot is filled.

Studio Weeks

Creative arts

Clay Workshops are taught by Julie Dean at her ceramics studio at 508 S. Albany Street. There is a maximum of 5 students for these sessions. Three of the five days, students will work on projects using clay slabs and coils as well as working on the potters’ wheel with guided instruction. These sessions will also provide time to glaze our work before a mid-week firing. Thursday and Friday’s classes will focus on paste paper journals and free play with air dry clays. Digital Photography classes are taught by Gwen Bullock both in the Abovoagogo Studio and in the computer lab at Village at Ithaca. There is a maximum of 6 students for these sessions. Using formal art perspectives, we will take each day as a lesson in framing the photograph, thinking of what attributes give it particular advantages as an art form, and how to use the camera to tell a story. We will have daily critiques, building on individual talents of the students to produce a small portfolio as a final project. A small digital camera is required, and basic Photoshop will be taught to enhance images, take them to a personal aesthetic level, or have fun turning them into new imaginative art works. Themes include: Symbols, Color, Nature, Micro/Macro perspectives. Students need to bring a digital camera. Sculpture is taught by Stiller Zusman, both at the Abovoagogo Studio and at the Sculpture yard located around the corner on Plain Street. There is a maximum of 9 students. This workshop is all about building things in three dimensions. We will be carving, casting, modeling and constructing, using paper clay, plaster, concrete, wood, glue, wire and color. Students will become familiar with how we interpret the visual language of objects in space. Work in sculpture will be paired with practice in drawing, as we plan and then document the artworks we have created. Collage Color and Cutouts is a 2 dimensional mixed media workshop, taught by Stiller Zusman at the Abovoagogo Studio. There is a maximum of 9 students in this session, where we will be reshaping and combining images with painting and mark-making to create something new out of something old. Painting Workshop is taught by Stiller Zusman at the Abovoagogo Studio with a maximum of 9 students. Dive into color, learn how it works. Paint what you see and what you imagine. We will work on paper wood and cloth with a variety of mediums. Come prepared to get messy. Morning and afternoon studio sessions will be offered as separate classes, with the option to have lunch and swim at Alex Haley Pool in between.
