Proposed amendment to allow smoking in bars fitted with "Filtration" equipment. |
NOTE: By a 16-8 vote on June 21, 2004 the Destito bill did not pass out of the Assembly Health Committee, thereby preventing it from moving to the legislative floor during this session. The followi9ng information remains posted to this site to provide background information on the topic. |
Filtration/ ventilation is not protection from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Though legislation is pending that would allow
smoking in bars and bowling alleys that install filtration equipment,
there are is no evidence that filtration will reduce the
health risks of secondhand tobacco smoke and there is considerable
evidence that it will not. Manufacturers'
disclaimer: "A reduction of the harmful constituents
of secondhand smoke does not protect against the disease
and death caused by exposure to secondhand smoke." Research:
Application of proposed indoor air quality standards for secondhand
tobacco smoke would require "tornado-like" levels of ventilation
to remain compliant. "Consumers
should be informed that these companies' products, being
touted as an alternative to New York's smokefree workplace law,
do not provide protection against the serious health risks -- such
as heart attacks -- that can be triggered by secondhand smoke,"
