Flu Clinics Now Open to Everyone Age 19 Years and Older
Ithaca, NY (November 13, 2006) – The
Tompkins County Health Department has opened its remaining flu
clinics to all Tompkins County residents 19 years of age and
older. All adults, regardless of their risk from complications
from the flu may receive a flu shot at any of the TCHD clinics.
The cost of the flu vaccination is $30 but no one will be denied
a shot based on inability to pay. Medicare participants should
bring their Medicare Part B cards; TCHD accepts Medicare Part
B as full payment.
Flu immunization clinics will be held through November 27th.
Those interested in receiving a flu shot may make an appointment
by going to the Department’s website: www.tompkins-co.org/health
or by calling 274-6616 Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
Flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances of getting
the flu. And those who get vaccinated also protect their loved
ones and people they come in contact with on a daily basis at
work or at school. Most people recover completely from the flu
but they may be sick for a week or two and be unable to work,
attend school, or participate in social activities. The flu
can cause fever, sore throat, headache, chills, fatigue, cough,
and muscle aches.
While allergic reactions to flu vaccine are rare, there are
some people who should not get vaccinated or should talk to
their doctor before getting flu vaccine. These include people
who have severe (life-threatening) allergies to eggs and anyone
who has had a severe reaction after a previous dose of influenza
vaccine. Anyone who has had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) should
also consult his or her doctor.
