Typical Flu Season – January through MarchFlu activity in New York State and in our region is currently below the activity level in late fall, but in some areas is still higher than normal for this time of year. Most of the flu circulating now is H1N1. TCHD expects the activity to pick up in our area as students return from winter break. This is the typical pattern in Tompkins County. Those who have been ill with the flu have experienced lost work and school days due to the flu and to secondary infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia and ear infections. TCHD along with the New York State Department of Health and the CDC encourages everyone to get a H1N1 vaccination. There is concern that there could be a possible third wave of H1N1 flu; vaccination is the best protection. There are other opportunities to receive the H1N1 vaccination. Some local providers and pharmacies have the vaccine. Call ahead to check availability.
