Published on February 13, 2025

On February 13th, 2025 at 11:09 AM, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office was monitoring traffic on Mclean Cortland Road, Town of Groton.  While observing traffic, Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a blue 2017 Ford F250 for a speed violation and for displaying improper plates (switched plates).  The stop was conducted on Mclean Cortland Road.

Deputies interviewed the driver, Jason N. D. Brotherton, age 41 of Dryden, and discovered that Brotherton held a revoked NYS driver's license and was operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.  Deputies then conducted a subsequent vehicle inventory and contacted a tow to remove the vehicle.  During their inventory, Deputies located Suboxone Strips, which Brotherton did not have a prescription for,  and a loaded handgun tucked between the driver's seat and center console.  This discovery led to Brotherton's arrest.

Brotherton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class C Felony), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), and numerous traffic tickets related to the stop.  Brotherton was later turned over to Centralized Arraignment.
