(Ithaca, N.Y., February 20, 2025) – Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the customers of the West Danby Water District to a boil water order for the water system due to a loss of pressure. Bring water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using. Customers can also use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.

At approximately 8:00 pm on February 19, 2025, the water system lost pressure. When water mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful bacteria can enter your water and make people sick.

Symptoms of illness from harmful bacteria in drinking water may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. Additional risk is possible for infants, elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. If you experience any of these symptoms and they continue, seek medical advice.

Water district officials are working closely with Tompkins County Whole Health to contain any leaks, restore pressure, and test to confirm safe drinking water for customers.

Scott Freyburger, Public Health Engineer states, “Customers of the West Danby Water District will need to boil water until further notice. We are working closely with the operators to make sure residents are aware and taking precautions. Customers will be notified when the tests show that they no longer need to boil water.”
