UPDATE: LOCAL COOLING CENTERS - Only GIAC Cooling Center Open Today

Wednesday, July 7, 2010
The Tompkins County Chapter of the American Red Cross has advised that only the heat emergency cooling center located at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) is open today.

The cooling center located at Friends Hall on the Cornell University campus will not be open. A decision regarding whether the Friends Hall center will be open tomorrow will be made by later this afternoon.

Tompkins County and the Red Cross decided yesterday to open cooling centers to assist those at high risk for health problems and have no other options during the current heat wave.

The GIAC cooling center, located at 318 N. Albany Street, Ithaca, opened at 1:00 and will remain open until 7:00 p.m. Anyone coming to the cooling center must sign in and obtain a visitor tag. The cooling center is located at the "pee wee center' room on the first floor, Court Street side, near the gymnasium.

For further information regarding local cooling centers, transportation, and other available non-emergency services during this heat wave, residents are advised to call 2-1-1.
