Public Hearing on 2015 Tentative Budget November 10

Friday, November 7, 2014

The County Legislature invites county residents to comment on the County’s proposed 2015 budget at a public budget hearing to be held Monday, November 10.

The hearing, on the recommended budget, as amended by the Legislature, and the 2015-2019 Capital Program, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the County Legislative Chambers, located on the second floor of the Governor Daniel D. Tompkins Building, 121 E. Court Street, Ithaca.  The public hearing is the official opportunity during the budget process for the public to provide input on the budget.

The amended budget would increase the County tax levy by 2.5% and decrease the countywide average tax rate by 0.45%.  The recommended tax rate of $6.86 per thousand is about a penny higher than in the Administrator’s budget, representing an increase of $8.67 for the median-valued $165,000 home.  Since the increase would be below the adjusted 3.14% State property tax cap, the amount would be returned to the homeowner under the new property tax freeze law.  For 2015, the County solid waste fee would also decrease by $4.00, to $52.00 per household.

Legislators may further amend the budget after Monday’s hearing and before the final adoption vote November 18.

The County Administrator’s recommended 2015 Budget and the amendments subsequently approved by the Legislature are posted for review online at the County Budget page.
