Members Sought to Serve on Independent Redistricting Commission

Friday, April 8, 2011
The Tompkins County Legislature is seeking applications from county residents interested in serving on the County's Independent Redistricting Commission. The commission is charged with preparing a reapportionment plan for County legislative districts, based on results from the 2010 Census.

The nine-member commission, created by the County Legislature at its April 5 meeting, must by next March submit for consideration by the Legislature a recommended reapportionment plan that specifies the number and geographical boundaries of districts from which members of the Legislature are elected.

To qualify for potential service on the Redistricting Commission, you must be a resident of Tompkins County and a registered voter, and may not be a currently elected municipal official, or an officer of any political party or political committee. Members of the commission will serve until discharged by the Legislature after a local law is passed adopting a redistricting plan.

To apply to serve on the Redistricting Commission, you must complete and submit the County's Advisory Board application. The application is available for download online at http://www.tompkins-co.org/legislature/advisory/resume.pdf.

To request an application, contact the Legislature Office at 607-274-5434 or by e-mail at legislature@tompkins-co.org, or visit the office, located on second floor of the County Courthouse, 320 N. Tioga Street, Ithaca..

Commission members will be appointed by the Legislature. Applications must be received no later than April 20 to be considered.
