Keep Everyone Safe in Winter Weather

A Public Safety Message from Tompkins County Highway

As Tompkins County Highway crews work to keep roads clear of snow and ice during winter weather events, here are some important things to keep in mind to keep everyone safe:

• Be sure that children are supervised when playing in the snow. Snow forts or tunnels near the roadway are extremely dangerous, as kids are in danger of being covered, trapped or crushed by snow as plows come through.winter highway safety image #2

• Do not park your vehicle anywhere that is blocking the road in any way. Snow plows need to have full access to roadway to keep it clear and safe. When a vehicle obstructs the driving lane, the plow driver is either forced to cross the centerline, or to come to a complete stop in the case of oncoming traffic, creating a dangerous situation.

Please take care to ensure that our highways are safe for everyone.
