Health and Human Services Committee to Hear About 2-1-1 Service

Friday, April 6, 2018

The Health and Human Services Committee of the County Legislature will feature an informational presentation about the “211 Tompkins Cortland” service, provided by the Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County, at its next meeting April 9th.

The meeting will take place Monday, April 9, beginning at 4:00 p.m., at Legislature Chambers, located in the Governor Daniel D. Tompkins Building (second floor), 121 E. Court Street, Ithaca.

The Human Services Coalition provides the following introduction to its local 2-1-1 service:

The Human Services Coalition has provided information and referral services to Tompkins County for more than 35 years. Since 2007, this program has been part of the national 2-1-1 network, offering community members a one-stop resource for human and social services information, referrals to programs, and more.

2-1-1 is contacted more than 13,000 times a year by phone (just dial 2-1-1), email, online chat and web search at the Human Services Coalition website, and through walk-ins at our Center Ithaca location. 2-1-1 also provides specialized services for the Tompkins County community, including scheduling appointments for the VITA free income tax preparation program at Alternatives Federal Credit Union, and taking ride requests for the FISH volunteer medical transportation service.

2018 will see some major additions to 2-1-1 services in Tompkins County. Later this spring, community members will be able to get in touch with trained 2-1-1 staff and volunteers by sending a text message to TXT211 (898211). This will help even more people get the information they need by reducing communication barriers and providing another way to get in touch. 2-1-1 will also be offering additional support for individuals on Medicaid in support of their transportation needs.

This presentation will provide an overview of 2-1-1 services and highlight the new additions in 2018.
