Focus on Suicide Prevention at Next Health and Human Services Committee Meeting

Wednesday, June 6, 2018

At its upcoming meeting on Monday, June 11, the Health and Human Services Committee of the Tompkins County Legislature will focus on suicide prevention initiatives in this community, and progress made toward implementing a “Zero Suicide Model” here in Tompkins County.

The meeting will take place beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, the 11th, at County Legislature Chambers, located in the Daniel D. Tompkins Building, 121 E. Court Street, Ithaca.

The committee will hear from leaders of the County’s Mental Health Department regarding the Tompkins County Suicide Prevention Coalition, a group of concerned providers committed to taking concrete steps to adopt and implement the Zero Suicide Model.  Also presenting will be leaders of the Sophie Fund, a non-profit charitable corporation established to support mental health initiatives aiding young people in Ithaca and Tompkins County—in part, serving as an advocate for young people struggling with mental illness.

New York State officials have hailed the “extraordinary progress” the Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Sophie Fund have achieved in addressing suicide prevention in Tompkins County, thanking them for their “leadership and commitment to make Tompkins County a suicide safer community.”

More information can be found in agenda materials for the June 11 meeting, posted on the Tompkins County Meeting Portal of the County website at www.TompkinsCountyNY.gov .  Direct link to the meeting agenda:  http://tompkinscountyny.iqm2.com/Citizens/Detail_Meeting.aspx?ID=2860  .
