David M. McKenna (R)
District 8, Town of Newfield and a portion of the Town of Enfield

Contact Information for Legislators

David McKenna was born in Geneva, New York and raised in Ithaca from the age of three. He has lived and worked in Tompkins County most of his life and has been part of the Newfield community for over 40 years.  He and his wife Arlene have two grown children and five grandchildren. His son is an Ithaca Police Department Officer, who resides in Newfield. His daughter and her husband own a small farm in Friendship, New York, and his son-in-law works for Friendship Cheese Co.

Mr. McKenna joined the US Naval Reserve while in high school and after graduation in 1965, went on active duty the following spring, and was released from active duty in 1968. He was married and started working as a draftsman at NCR in the following weeks. He worked for NCR for the next sixteen years, attended TC3 evenings, earned an AAS degree in Mechanical Technology, and became lead designer in NCR’s Research and Development Group. In 1983 he left NCR to help start Ithaca Peripherals Inc. and served as manager of Mechanical Engineering for the next sixteen years, then in 2000 moved to the manufacturing end of the company (now called Transact Technologies Inc.), where he was responsible for manufacturing engineering for several product lines and served as model shop manager and facilities manager.

Since his position was eliminated in 2005, Mr. McKenna has done many things. Past service includes working for Cornell as a temporary Technician for a research program, and for the Tompkins County Board of Elections and the Ithaca City School District as a voting machine technician. He holds a Commercial Driver License and serves as a school bus driver for ICSD and Ithaca Airline Limousine.

Dave’s hobbies include building and flying radio controlled aircraft of all kinds, holding several offices in the local club over the past 30 years, including treasurer for the last few years. He is also a member of the Ithaca Aviation Heritage Foundation Inc., which is building a full-scale Thomas Morris Scout, produced at Morse Chain, to be displayed and flown on the 100th anniversary of its production. Dave also enjoys restoring old cars and machinery.

Dave’s goal in serving on the County Legislature is to bring common sense to county government.

Legislators are elected and serve for four years. Current terms run from 2018 through 2021.
