Tompkins County Legislator

Amanda Champion

District 12, Town of Ithaca

Amanda Champion is joining the Legislature for her first term in 2018, which is her first expedition into the political arena. Though she has worked and volunteered in many places throughout the County since her arrival here in 2000, her full-time job for years has been motherhood. She lives on West Hill with her husband who operates a small construction business, her stepdaughter (when she is home from college), and her son who attends Lehman Alternative Community School.

Amanda holds a BA in Environmental Studies and Anthropology from the University of Michigan. She traveled widely in her post-college years and also spent six months thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. She worked a variety of jobs between college and motherhood, but her favorites were the various assignments as a Park Ranger in Utah, Maine, and Virginia.

Amanda recently earned her MFA in creative writing from Chatham University. She is a Senior Editor and Creative Nonfiction Editor at Literary Mama, an online literary journal dedicated to motherhood. She is a freelance writer and has written for a range of journals and magazines, both local and national.

Amanda is passionate about fighting for women’s rights and equality, protecting the natural world, and preserving the social safety net for our community.

Legislators are elected and serve for four years. Current terms run from 2018 through 2021.
