What Are Tompkins County’s Health Challenges? Health Department Seeks Community Input

(ITHACA, N.Y., May 7, 2013) — What are Tompkins County’s greatest health challenges, today and over the next five years? The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) invites the community to weigh in on this question as part of a Community Health Assessment (CHA).

Community feedback is being collected through a brief, five-question survey that is available online at “The Health Department is here to promote a healthy community and we do that with the help and participation of everyone who lives and works in Tompkins County,” says Public Health Director, Frank Kruppa. That’s why we are “Your Partner for a Healthy Community,” he added.

Businesses, community members, non-profit agencies, schools, colleges, health care providers, and local governments are encouraged to complete the survey at

The Tompkins County Health Department is leading the process of identifying the health priorities for Tompkins County. Along with community input, the process involves extensive collection and analysis of health indices and local data. The Community Health Assessment will serve as the foundation for the Community Health Improvement Plan for the next five years.

There are five areas that communities can prioritize to plan and implement health improvement activities:

  • Prevent Chronic Diseases
  • Promote a Healthy and Safe Environment
  • Promote Healthy Women, Infants and Children
  • Promote Mental Health and Prevent Substance Abuse
  • Prevent HIV, STDs, Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Healthcare Associated Infections
