Health Department Seeks Information About a Dog to Rule Out Rabies Infection

(ITHACA, N.Y., February 26, 2018) — The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a dog that bit a person at the Ithaca Dog Park off of Taughannock Boulevard in Ithaca. The bite occurred Sunday, February 25, 2018, between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The biting dog is described as medium-sized black dog with no markings wearing a green harness. The dog’s name is reportedly “Spencer” and was accompanied by a woman while at the Ithaca Dog Park.

The Department seeks to verify the vaccination status, as well as the health of the biting dog through a ten day observation period. If the dog can be located and observed to be healthy by the Department, the risk of rabies infection can be ruled out and rabies post-exposure treatment for the person who was bitten will not be necessary.

Anyone with information regarding this dog is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
