Going Smokefree
A checklist of things employers can do to get their workplace ready to Go Smokefree.

The state's newly expanded Clean Indoor Air Act goes into effect on Thursday, July 24. Many workplaces went mostly or entirely smokefree when the original Clean Indoor Air Act became law over a decade ago. For others, the expanded Act represents a significant change in procedure. Here are some steps to consider in preparation for compliance.

  •  Post "No Smoking" signs
  •  Develop a workplace smoking policy (or revise an existing one.)

  •  Remove all ashtrays and other items that accommodate smokers.
  •  Meet with staff to review the expanded NYS law. Distribute informational brochure or pamphlet with paychecks.
Brochures are available from the TC Health Department.
  •  Designate an individual (owner, manager, operator, or other employee) to monitor compliance by employees, and where applicable by customers and visitors. This individual will be responsible for informing anyone who is smoking that they are in a no smoking area.

  •  Clean current smoking areas to remove smoke odors and stains.
