Rabid Fox from Buttermilk Falls State Park

May 15, 2012 (Ithaca, N.Y.) — On May 15, 2012, a red fox from Buttermilk Falls State Park was determined to be rabid by the New York State Rabies Laboratory.

The fox was known to have attacked several people, biting one person before being shot by the Park Police.  It is believed the same fox attacked a dog on Spencer Road.  If you or your pets have had any contact with a fox in this area on or prior to May 11, 2012, please contact the Tompkins County Environmental Health Department at 607-274-6688 immediately to discuss possible exposure to rabies.

The Tompkins County Health Department is providing a free rabies clinic to vaccinate cats, dogs, and ferrets on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Town of Ithaca Highway Garage, located at 106 Seven Mile Drive, Ithaca.  Call 607-274-6688 for more information.
