Media Advisory: State Health Commissioner to Salute City of Ithaca,Tompkins County During National Public Health Week

Cites Collaborative Efforts to Create a Tobacco Free New York

ITHACA, N.Y. (April 3, 2009) - On Monday, April 6, at 2 p.m. State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., will present a Public Health Excellence Award to the Tompkins County Health Department, the City of Ithaca, and Tobacco Free Tompkins at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Ithaca Commons, an area that would be designated "tobacco free" under a proposed city ordinance being considered by the Ithaca Common Council.

The award will recognize the collaborative efforts of the three groups to prevent tobacco use and protect New Yorkers against exposure to second-hand smoke. The Commissioner's stop in Ithaca is part of an 8-county National Public Health Week trip highlighting successful local public health efforts.

WHO: State Health Commissioner Richard Daines., Ithaca Mayor Caroline Peterson; Tompkins County Health Director Alice Cole; Ted Schiele, Coordinator for Tobacco Free Tompkins.
