February 6, 2015

Tompkins County District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson today announced the sentencing of Laureen F. Hamilton, 53, to 60 days incarceration plus 3 years of probation supervision for stealing over $8,000 from a local teacher’s union from January 2012 through September of 2013. The defendant was found guilty by a jury in Tompkins County Court of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.

As proven at trial, Hamilton was the president of the Educational Support Professionals of Ithaca, a local teacher’s union. As president, Ms. Hamilton had access to the union’s bank account for purposes of union business. Between January 2012 through September of 2013, Hamilton made unauthorized charges against the union’s bank account for her personal use, including cash withdrawals, car insurance, and utility bills. A review of the union’s bank account revealed that Hamilton charged over $8,000 in personal expenses using union money.

The investigation was conducted by the Ithaca Police Department.

The sentence was imposed by the Honorable John C. Rowley. Assistant District Attorney Daniel Johnson handled the prosecution of the case.
